005 | N17 Protests
In one of the more peaceful November 17 protests of the last few years, approximately 16,000 people marched to the U.S. Embassy in Athens to commemorate a student uprising that was crushed by Greece’s military regime in 1973.
People of all ages, including many students and senior citizens, walked from the Polytechnic building in the Athens suburb of Exarcheia.
Tuesday’s rally took place under very heavy police security, with more than 5,000 cops on duty for a protest that has been marred by violence in the last few years.
Protestors chanted anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans and called on the Greek government to refrain from sending Greek troops to fight against ISIS.
